Total Quality Management (TQM) is a philosophy of total organizational involvement in improving all aspects of the quality of products and services provided by an organization. It is achieved through employee empowerment in decision-making, the use of facilitated teams in the organization, individual responsibility for products and services, strong customer service orientation, setting values, envisioning a mission, maintaining commitment, sustaining motivation, prioritizing tasks, cooperating and collaborating with others, communicating effectively and efficiently and seeking continuous quality improvement.
Total Quality Management focuses on the problems and potentials of the healthcare delivery system in Africa and how the Total Quality Management strategy is the most appropriate approach towards improving the quality of services rendered. It outlines Total Quality Management philosophy, goals and objectives as put forward by gurus such as Edward Demming, Joseph Juran and Philip Crosby, as well as quality improvement techniques and tools, organizational structures and quality improvement processes.
This book analyses and evaluates the problems and potentials of the African healthcare industry, the human resource dilemma and the effects and impact of the brain drain of medical professionals to Europe and the USA on healthcare service delivery in Africa. It also makes a comparative analysis of various healthcare systems around the world.
The book takes a closer look at some non-governmental and humanitarian organizations involved in the delivery of health services in Africa such as the World Bank, WHO, QAP, UNDP, COHSASA, and others. A strategy plan for the implementation of a typical Total Quality Management project in an organization is outlined in the last chapter.
