Marketing and Promotion

The Marketing Department of University Press of America strives to promote every publication to as many interested individuals, libraries, academic institutions, and associations as possible. The marketing process will begin when:

    • a completed Author Questionnaire is received
    • a camera ready manuscript is submitted
    • an ISBN has been assigned
    • the book has been priced
    • a pre-publication order has been placed

To achieve the maximum exposure for a book a marketing plan, similar to the one listed below, will be executed.

    Marketing Plan

    • Wholesaler Notification
ABI forms (Advanced Book Information) will be sent to major book wholesalers in the United States, as well as primary distributors around the world, up to four months ahead of publication. UPA depends on these wholesalers and distributors for library and select bookstore sales.

    • UPA Web site
This web site hosts a user-friendly catalog of over 5,000 titles. After publication, every book is listed in the UPA online book catalog (www.univpress.com), along with a book description, table of contents, author biography, promotional endorsements, and pricing and ordering information. The online catalog is available worldwide to users of the Internet. Additionally, every book will be listed on the web sites of online booksellers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

    • Direct Mail
Each fall and spring UPA produces and mails over 30 subject catalogs to academics and libraries throughout the U.S. These mailings follow the schedule of the academic school year in order to promote UPA books for course adoption. Quarterly, UPA mails smaller brochures that highlight new titles to libraries and other appropiate audiences. For select disciplines, cluster flyers, postcards and brochures are produced and mailed to targeted audiences throughout the year.

    • International Exposure
Follow this link to see a complete list of our international distributors.

    • Promotional Flyers
UPA provides sets of promotional flyers to distribute at meetings and appearances, or to use in mailings.

    • Review Copies
Ten copies will be sent to leading academic journals around the country, based on suggestions in the Author Questionnaire and other sources. UPA will send the author a list of the venues receiving review copies, as well as any published reviews.

    • Conventions and Meetings
Books will be displayed at academic conventions and conferences related to their disciplines throughout the year.
